  33. Not true. In fact on the Alpha, there are drivers for the Diamond Stealth 64
  34. and NOT the ATI. I wanted to get the ATI but could not because nobody has
  35. NT-Alpha drivers for it. So instead, I am using a 4MB VRAM Stealth 64.

  37. As for the choice of Pentium system, I too looked at the Maximus inititially
  38. thinking that it was one hell of a package. But further investigation made
  39. me realize that I should pay more attention to the base machine than all the
  40. spiffy add-ons. Basically, there is a fairly enormous performance difference
  41. between all the different clone makers, and in virtually every independent
  42. test, the Zeos systems have proven to be the fastest (in many cases by a very
  43. large margin) using the exact same cpu and clock speed. One of the most extensive
  44. tests was done in the Dec.6th PC Magazine in which 165 systems were tested.
  45. Unfortunately, the Maximus was not one of the tested systems, so its pretty
  46. much an unknown quantity. Personally, if I were getting a Pentium system for
  47. rendering, I'd get a stripped P100 Zeos Pantera and build the rest up myself.
  48. The Zeos systems are also one of the most cost effective.

  50. Back to graphics cards, the jury is still out on what will be the best cards to
  51. use with LW. Stuart has done some extensive testing and seen huge differences
  52. in performance with minor changes in draw primitives amongst the various cards.
  53. So its still not yet clear which board would be the best to buy. If you're not in
  54. a rush to get the system, wait till LW is available and these things are more
  55. fully understood. Otherwise, any NT capable SVGA card should work just fine.
